The index is sorted by surname, firstname, and ascending order of age; and shows also the relationship to the head of a household, condition as to marriage, occupation, and where born. The final three numeric columns show the Enumerator's Schedule Number - which will direct the user to the relevant PRO piece number - and the folio and page numbers within the schedule.
Users are advised to check every reference against the original schedules. Mistakes will be found, not only becuase of the occasional difficulty in transcribing the handwriting of any one enumerator, but also because of the confusion resulting from the evidence of several hands having worked on a schedule. The occasional details added by the Registrar General's army of civil servants add something to this state of confusion, whilst the odd tally mark obliterates evidence. Page 36 of enumeration district 5 is of very poor quality and is extremely difficult to read; what little information to be gleaned from this page will be found at the end of the index along with other difficult entries.
The abbreviations used for the counties are the Chapman County Codes; those for relation to head of household are adapted from the work of earlier indexers. Details of both are on the following pages.
