Chevington St John the Divine

Church

The nave was built in 1858 and together with those of Acklington and Amble, 'born' from the Mother Church of St. Lawrence, Warkworth. The building consisting of black dolomite whinstone taken from a local quarry, cost £1,200 of which sum Henry Earl Grey contributed £1,100 and Mr Addison John Baker Esq of Cresswell gave £100. Earl Grey also gave the site and surrounding burial ground which has been closed for fifty years. The chancel and choir vestry were added in 1893 at a cost of £658 raised mainly by public subscription (the builder R. Gordon of Sunderland). There is a fine two manual organ, built by Harrison and Harrison of Durham. A new altar rail, clergy and choir stalls, done in light oak, together with a flat roof choir vestry, were added in 1958 to celebrate the centenary. New lighting and complete rewiring was carried out by NEEB in 1980. The church accomodates 300. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 94.]
