In 1107 Queen Maud gave the Manor of Old Bewick to Tynemouth Priory in memory of her father, slain at Alnwick and buried at Tynemouth. The Norman Arch of the sanctuary and windows date from that period. The fourteenth century effigy in the choir is said to have been much damaged by Lesley's troops in 1640. By eighteenth century it was almost a total ruin. Restored in 1867. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 107.]
