This small rectangular church, rebuilt in 1737 is on the site at Heavenfield where Oswald, King of Northumbria and Martyr defeated Cadwalla in 634 AD, after erecting a wooden cross on the battlefield and commanding his soldiers to pray.
It is the parish church and formed part of the parish of St John Lee up to the year 1879. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 33.]
