The 'New' Parish Church was the gift of the Rev'd and Mrs J.A. Blackett-Ord in memory of William Ord Esq., from whom Mrs Blackett-Ord had inherited his whole estate. A very beautiful church in early English style. The church abounds in craftsmanship in stone, wood, wrought-iron and glass. It contains many memorials to the Blackett-Ord family; dedicated patrons and generous benefactors to the church and community from the time of their ownership of Whitfield to the present. A beautiful church in a glorious setting: well worth a visit. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 53.]
