Church

In March 1885 at a meeting of parishioners called by the Hon. and Rev. W.E. Ellis, Rector of Bothal, held in the Ashington School, a scheme for erecting a church and forming a new parish was introduced and explained. The Duke of Portland promised a donation of £500 towards the undertaking, and also a free gift of two acres of land for the site of the church and burial land. The Ashington Coal Company also promised £300, making a total of £800 towards the cost.

It was estimated that the cost of the project would be £1,100 to £1,200.

The church was built by William Carse and Sons of Amble. The first baptism was administered on Sunday 6 February 1887. The church was opened for service under licence from the Bishop on 30 January 1887.

There had been arrangements to have a bell tower when the church was first designed, but the Coal Company objected because it would keep their employees awake when they were not down the pit.

There is no record kept of how many Vicars there have been in the Parish, but none could have been here longer than Rev. (Sammy) Davison, from 1905 to 1943. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 111.]
