The church (name unknown) stands on an eminence, and was rebuilt in 1790: it is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of nave and a western turret containing one bell: the east window, erected about 1855, is stained, and another in the nave is a memorial to the Knight Gregson family: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1720. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Thomas Forster Dodd, M.A. of University College, Durham. [Kelly's Directory of Northumberland and Durham (1890), page 810.]

Berwick Advertiser 30/9/1848 Many of our readers will be glad to learn that the Rev. Mr. Nicholson and family (late of Lowick) reached New Zealand in good health and spirits, after a short and prosperous voyage of 93 days. The John Wickliffe, the vessel in which they sailed from the Thames entered the harbour of Otago on the morning of the 22d March, and after remaining there for three weeks was to proceed to Wellington, from which Mr Nicholson would cross Cook's Straight to Nelson, the scene of his future labours. All the voyagers were spared to see the long-sought haven.
