Originally Scremerston was part of the ancient parish of Ancroft. It is interesting to note that most of the land around here belonged to the ill-fated Lord Derwentwater, who was executed for his part in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. His property is now managed by the Greenwich Hospital Estates. Although the parish of Scremerston is largely agricultural, the village itself owes its growth and development to coal mining. There were several pits in the area, all of them are now closed. Fortunately, the village with only 500 souls retains a strong communal life. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 127.]
