Church

The church of St. James is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower, with a spire and four pinnacles added in 1895, and containing 6 bells: there are several memorial windows and at the east end of the chancel some good carved work, presented by Ralph Brown esq. of Benwell Grange: a porch and vestries, the gift of Sir Walter Scott, were erected in 1895: the church has since undergone alterations and enlargement, including the erection of a chancel and north aisle: a new organ was provided in 1900, at a cost of £500: there are 1,300 sittings: in 1900 an acre of land, the gift of Buddle Atkinson esq. was added to the churchyard. The register dates from the year 1832. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £480, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Newcastle, and held since 1919 by the Rev. Carey Frederick Knyvett O.B.E., M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, and Hon. C.F. [Kelly's Northumberland Directory (1925), page 228.]
