The cost of the building was partly defrayed out of a gift made to the Bishop of Newcastle's fund, by John Spencer of Newburn Steel Works for the requirements of Newburn Parish the remainder of the cost being an offering by John Spencer of Whorlton Hall to the this parish in memory of his wife who died in 1882. [The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 78.]
